My original education and professional development were in the field of manufacturing engineering; later on specifically design for manufacturing. All along I had an interest in complementary and integrative health and decided to pursue a career as an acupuncturist. After owning a clinic in which I saw 60+ patients per week, I transitioned over to the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging first as a research acupuncturist and then added program coordinator responsibilities. As a research acupuncturist, my job is to provide acupuncture therapy services to research subjects enrolled in ongoing clinical and basic research studies. I schedule and treat research subjects both inside the MRI scanner and outside the scanner using MR-compatible acupuncture needles and acupuncture related devices, including electro-acupuncture, when necessary. As program coordinator, I support and facilitate the daily clinical trial activities (compliance, training, etc) by working with the PIs, RAs, site support, sponsors and subjects. To date my research efforts have been specific to the analysis of the effects of acupuncture and placebo on pain as measured by fMRI. My engineering training combined with my traditional Oriental medical and allopathic experience has left me uniquely positioned to work in the dynamic fields of chronic pain and neuroimaging research. I look forward to continuing my collaborations with researchers of all backgrounds to further support the Martinos Center in our mission to develop a better understanding of the complexities of the human mind and body.
