I am an anthropologist based at the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse and Harvard University. My research seeks to understand the biological and social factors that enable humans to solve collective action problems and to commit violence. I use ethnographic fieldwork among the societies of southwest Ethiopia, quantitative data, experimental paradigms, and modeling as a foundation upon which to understand human behavior. I have related research projects on the emergence of norms, ritual, and collective behavior. A copy of my current cv is here

I have written media publications for the Washington Post, New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere. My research has been covered by the Wall Street Journal, BBC Radio, and the Los Angeles Times, and I have been interviewed by the New York TimesScientific American, and the Washington Post, among others. Please see my research page for a more detailed description of current projects and interests.
