I am a political scientist interested in civic associations, civic engagement, engagement organizing, political activism, and health and environmental politics.

I have also studied political polarization, congressional elections, interest groups, social movements, and other topics.  My research has appeared in the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, and other journals.

Two of my books, How Organizations Develop Activists: Civic Associations and Leadership in the 21st Century and Groundbreakers: How Obama's 2.1 Million Activists Transformed Field Campaigns in America will appear with Oxford University Press in the summer of 2014. My first book, Moved to Action: Motivation, Participation, and Inequality in American Politics is available here.
