I am a political scientist interested in the politics of social policy, especially civic associations, civic engagement, engagement organizing, political activism, and environmental politics.

I have also studied political polarization, congressional elections, interest groups, social movements, and other topics.  My research has appeared in the American Political Science Review, the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, and other journals.

I have written three books: How Organizations Develop Activists: Civic Associations and Leadership in the 21st CenturyGroundbreakers: How Obama's 2.2 Million Activists Transformed Field Campaigns in America, and Moved to Action: Motivation, Participation, and Inequality in American Politics. You can find more information on these books on the menu items on this site.
