I am a political scientist interested in the politics of social policy, especially civic associations, civic engagement, engagement organizing, political activism, and health and environmental politics.

I have also studied political polarization, congressional elections, interest groups, social movements, and other topics.  My research has appeared in the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, and other journals.

I have written three books: How Organizations Develop Activists: Civic Associations and Leadership in the 21st CenturyGroundbreakers: How Obama's 2.1 Million Activists Transformed Field Campaigns in America, and Moved to Action: Motivation, Participation, and Inequality in American Politics. You can find more information on these books on the menu items on this site.
