My current research in African politics focuses on local conflict, election fraud, and ethnic politics in Kenya. While these phenomena are difficult to systematically measure, they often play a central roles in narratives and theories about politics in Africa. The three papers of my dissertation generate systematic answers to questions of fact about fraud, conflict, and ethnic politics by drawing on fields as diverse as natural language processing, demography, and spatial statistics.
