Judith Ryan

Short statement

Judith Ryan teaches and writes on literature from the late eighteenth century to the present. She has a particular interest in poetry and the novel. For some time, she has been working on the writings of W.G. Sebald, profiting from a number of visits to the German Literary Archive in Marbach, where much of his personal library, manuscripts, and materials are held. At the German Literary Archive, she has also worked on the contemporary poet Durs Grünbein, another interest of hers; an article on Grünbein's relation to classical antiquity appeared in Fall 2014. A new article on Rilke's Duino Elegiss and Sonnets to Orpheus appeared in March 2015 in a book of essays on culture literature, and politics in 1922 edited by Jean-Michel Rabaté.  An essay on "The Ransmayr-Sebald Connection" appeared in the yearbook Gegenwartsliteratur, 2016, and more recenlty, an article on "Berhard Schlink's Der Vorleser, Patrick Süskind's Das Parfum, and the Shifting Concept of Global Literature" was published in Colloqia Germanica, 2017. A brief contribution on Kafka's relation to literary modernism appeared in Kafka in Context, ed Carolin Duttlinger,  Cambridge University Press, 2018) .A chapter for a Companion volume on Hermann Broch's mass psychology project is in press at Camden House, and, despite a series of delays, should appear very soon.
