The Imperiia Project exists for a simple purpose: to study the spatial history of the Russian Empire.
In slightly more expansive terms, it documents, interrogates, visualizes, and interprets the history of Imperial Russia. It is a piece of historical scholarship. It is an example of digital history. Of spatial history. Of historical GIS. It is an experiment in new forms of contextualization. It is a laboratory for developing new narratives and new ways of telling (hi)stories.
