BIOGRAPHY

Hey! My name is Nian Hu and I'm a sophomore living in Mather House with a concentration in Government and secondary in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. I'm from New York City and I went to the Brearley School. I also participated in Prep for Prep.

At Harvard, I am an opinion columnist at the Crimson. I write and publish articles about cultural norms related to gender, and societal manifestations of gender inequality and the patriarchy. Some topics I've discussed in the past include sexual assault, rape culture, objectification and commodification of women's bodies, male sexual entitlement and toxic masculinity, and gender roles. I am also the comp director of the Crimson Editorial Board, and I am encourage you to speak to me if you're interested in comping.

At Harvard, I am also involved in the Institute of Politics. I am the Membership Manager Member-at-Large, so I help plan social events to cultivate community within the IOP. I am also the chair of the Education Policy group, a staff writer at the Harvard Political Review, a teacher through CIVICS, a past producer of Karin Agness's study group and past liaison for Candy Crowley's study group, and member of HPU and NAC. If you're interested in learning more about the IOP, I'm more than happy to talk to you about what my experience has been like.

While the Crimson and the IOP are my main extracurricular involvements, I am also a Consent Advocate and Relationship Educator (CARE) through OSAPR. I lead workshops and seminars on the importance of consent and healthy sexual relationships, and I also help organize events such as Harvard Wears Denim to raise awareness of sexual assault. I am also a hip hop choreographer for Expressions and Asian American Dance Troupe (AADT). I'm also the Director of Sisterhood at Alpha Phi.

Last summer I was in DC interning at the Library of Congress, doing research in the Newspapers & Periodicals division. I was also a research assistant for historian Ellen Fitzpatrick and helped her on a book she's writing about women in the US presidency. Interning and living in DC was truly a one-of-a-kind experience, and one that I'm happy to talk more about. This past winter break, I spent six weeks in Nashua, New Hampshire helping out with Hillary Clinton's campaign. And this summer, I won a grant from the Center for European Studies to intern at UN Watch, a Geneva-based NGO that focuses on human rights and the United Nations. I'm looking forward to attending UN Human Rights Council sessions and doing research on human rights, and also living and traveling around Switzerland, France, and Italy. This summer, I will also be a research assistant for two authors writing a book about gender differentiated dress codes.

If you're interested at all in travel, research, journalism, politics, finding and funding summer internships, getting involved in a political campaign, hip hop dance, sorority life, and intersectional feminism, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'd love to chat, preferably over some pad Thai or sushi (my treat). Looking forward to meeting you!
