Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholars in Health Policy Program

As a Health Policy Scholar, my current project explores how documentation status influences the healthcare access and utilization of Boston-area Latino immigrants. In other words, I want to learn how immigrants (who do or do not have legal status or papers) negotiate access to health insurance  and actual use of health services. Boston-area Latino immigrants are the focus of this study for three reasons: (1) their large numbers in Boston and the US have implications for understanding how racial and anti-immigrant discrimination perpetuate health disparities; (2) Massachusetts currently has mandated healthcare and findings from this project may have implications for how ethno-racial minorities access healthcare  when (if) national health reform is implemented; and (3) immigration reform has been another subject of debate in recent years. In essence, the aim of this study is to integrate two major debates, health care and immigration reform, in the hopes that findings will yield recommendations that can influence both healthcare and immigration policy.
