A Natural History of Destruction, is a montage of “poor images” (Steyerl) derived from various YouTube video uploads of different industrial sites in the Ruhr. They were edited according to a set of rules into a sequence of single-take shots. It reflects an historical memory of loss through the gaze of multiple individual subjectivities and collective experiences of spectatorship. It also mediates a perceptual experience of change---both as a phenomenological aspect linked to our ability to temporally experience duration as well as in relation to the Ruhr’s process of de-industrialization—within a single channel work.
