Faculty Director of Harvard Kennedy School’s Online Learning Initiative (2016-Present)

  • Spearheaded efforts to develop a digital learning vision/strategy and associated business plan to inform HKS leadership discussions.

  • Co-designed main online learning initiative to expand reach of Kennedy School in the world

  • Presented main online learning initiative to various committees, including full-faculty meeting, to get the buy-in necessary to move initiative forward 

  • Advanced the Kennedy School’s vision and experience in the use of technology to advance digital learning, including leveraging own early experimentation with online learning to expand use in various courses and executive education programs, and developing proof-of-concept dashboards for scalable blended learning using Just-In-Time teaching based on pre-class learning analytics

Faculty Co-Founder (2008) and Faculty Chair (2012-2018) of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Strengthening Learning and Teaching Excellence (SLATE) initiative. Key contributions include:

  • Provided strategic guidance for SLATE on a variety of initiatives including revamping of teaching awards, developing strategy for scaling up active learning at HKS, and restructuring SLATE’s Advisory Board to better leverage teaching and learning expertise across Harvard.

  • Mentored SLATE staff to develop a robust coaching practice (nearly 60% of core faculty members have engaged in one or more teaching consultation with our coaching team in the past year)

  • Co-created and contributed for 10 years to the annual New Faculty Institute (more than 30% of current core Kennedy School faculty have attended NFI)

  • Helped design and develop Teaching Week, a model that has since been replicated by several institutions, including the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Yale, Columbia, and CalTech.

Contributed to several university-wide efforts to advance the teaching mission of the university, including:

  • Co-chaired the university-wide HarvardX Research Committee for one year (2014). Committee is responsible for coordinating and supporting research initiatives involving HarvardX courses. Serve on the Vice-Provost for Advances in Learning (VPAL) Advisory Committee

  • Served on the Canvas Steering Committee, advising the Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) team on the university-wide adoption of Canvas as a learning management system.

  • Served as member of various committees and as conference presenter of activities organized by Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching (HILT)
