Cultural Agency Initiative

David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS)

Harvard University

One of the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies' (DRCLAS) many programs for fostering collaboration across disciplines and increasing scholarship on Latin America, the Cultural Agency Initiative focuses on the material as well as the invisible effects culture has on the world around us. Beginning from an understanding of the potential of cultural practice as vehicle for social change, projects, seminars, and workshops in the Cultural Agency Initiative consider issues related to the "vernacular" arts, ethnicity and performance theory, diaspora, "authenticity," bilingual-/biculturalism, family networks, and more. Workgroups join prominent Harvard University faculty — like Mary Louise Pratt, David Carrasco, Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, and Sander Gilman — with artists, activists, scholars, lawyers, community members, and others.
