Between 1915 and 1930, nearly 1.5 million African Americans migrated out of the U.S. South.  This “Great Migration” radically transformed African American culture, producing unprecedented political and economic opportunities; new religious, social, and political practices; and modernist experimentation in literature and art.  As black migrants went to movies, listened to radio, sported new fashions, and sought other kinds of urban amusements, they shaped these new media and consumer industries while experiencing modernity...
