By examining the history of colleges and universities in the United States from the 17^th century to the present, students will be better equipped to address contemporary challenges by becoming more informed professionals who understand the ways in which historical and social forces have influenced: the development of multiple types of colleges and universities; the various purposes and curricula of higher education; student culture and growing access to higher education; the role of faculty, administration, and student personnel; and the relationship of higher education to society.
