Elaine W. Yu, MD, MMSc is the principal investigator of the Yu Research Group, located within the Endocrine Unit of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).  Dr. Yu is Assistant Professor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the MGH Bone Density Center.  Our research is focused in the areas of obesity, bariatric surgery, and bone and mineral metabolism.

  • RYGB cortical porosity

Increased cortical porosity at the tibia after gastric bypass

  • Defects in trabecular microarchitecture are apparent at the L5 vertebrae and proximal tibia in mouse models of gastric bypass.

  • Bone Loss at Spine 2 Years Following Bariatric Surgery

Vertebral bone density declined in the first year after either Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG).

  • Katie Lindeman presents our data on fracture after bariatric surgery, which received the MGH Clinical Research Outcomes Award.

  • T2DM and Cortical Microacrchitecture

Lower cortical density and preserved trabecular microarchitecture is found in women with diabetes as compared to controls.
