  • Joshua J Gagne, PharmD, ScD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (Harvard Chan).  His research centers on the development, evaluation, and application of methods for generating post-approval comparative safety and effectiveness evidence for new medical products.  Dr. Gagne is Co-Lead of the Methods Core of the FDA-funded Sentinel program, Director of the Program in Pharmacoepidemiology at Harvard Chan, Director of the Active Surveillance Analytics in Pharmacoepidemiology (ASAP) Program, and Director of the Harvard-Brigham Drug Safety and Risk Management Research Center funded by the FDA.

    At Harvard Chan, Dr. Gagne teaches Pharmacoepidemiology (EPI221) and Topics in Medical Device Comparative Effectiveness Research (EPI521) together with Dr. Sonia Hernández-Diaz and Database Analytics in Pharmacoepidemiology (EPI286) with Dr. Sebastian Schneeweiss.  He also Co-Directs Successful Grant Writing Strategies through Harvard Catalyst, the Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center.  

    Dr. Gagne's research has been supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality, the Biologics & Biosimilars Collective Intelligence Consortium, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Harvard Catalyst, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA's Innovation in Medical Evidence Development and Surveillance program.  

    Dr. Gagne has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed research publications and is a member of the Editorial Boards of Drug Safety and of Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety.  He is also an Associate Editor for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institue.  He has won multiple awards for his research, teaching, and mentoring including the 2016 International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research Award for Excellence in Application of Pharmacoeconomics and Health Outcomes Research and the 2019 Harvard Chan Mentoring Award.

    Dr. Gagne graduated magna cum laude with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and received his Doctor of Science degree in Epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
