How are democracies created and why do they collapse? What causes revolution? What were the consequences of the industrial revolution? What roles do ideas, institutions and interests play in processes of political change? This course examines the long-term historical developments behind the creation of modern politics. Focusing on Britain, France, Germany and Italy from the 1600s to the 2000s, it explores the lessons Europe offers for the development of democracy around the world today.
