2013 Field Season

Goals of the the second season of the Erbil Plain Archaeological Survey (EPAS)

  1. Continue the intensive investigation of the regions around the important sites of Qasr Shemamok, Tell Surezha, Tell Baqrta, and Kurd Qaburstan;
  2. Make short investigations of sites and canal features along the right bank of the Upper Zab River;
  3. Investigate the zone of future development around the city of Erbil;
  4. Conduct preliminary geoarchaeological investigations of the floodplains of the Chai Siwasor and the Chai Kurdara, and of their associated ancient canal features

EPAS successfully completed most of these four goals in our 2013 field season, which included 22 field days between 21 August and 24 September.

Results

  • 121 archaeological sites covering 545 hectares (for a total of 214 sites recovered since 2012);
  • 440 artifact lots, including 12,311 artifacts, totaling more than 576 kilos;

  • Among the object recovered were several fine stone bowl fragments and a fragmentary cuneiform tablet of the Neo-Assyrian period (ca. 900-700 BC);Several ancient canals in the region of Abu Shita - Hawera.
