Berry Site/Joara, North Carolina (US)

Berry Site drone aerial

In June 2019, Jason Ur joined the Berry Site field school in Burke County, NC.  Berry is the location of a large Mississippian town, dating roughly A.D. 1400-1600, known as Joara, and the location of the Spanish colonial town of Cuenca and Fort San Juan, during the period of the Juan Pardo expeditions (1566-1568).

The project is a joint collaboration between Warren Wilson College, the University of Michigan, and Tulane University.  The project conducted UAV (drone) flights over the site and taught basic UAV autonomous flight and photogrammetry to the field school graduate teaching assistants.
