Biography

Javier is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Science and Engineering at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University. He works on renewable energy, biofuel & bioenergy, power modeling, BECCS, wood pellets and emission factor to investigate the potentials and challenges of non-intermittent renewable energy such as modern biofuels. He is also Lead Country Contributor in the UN Environment/Renewable Global Status Report (REN21); Entrepreneurship Director at Harvard GSAS Business Club; and serves as a Council Member at Harvard Council of Student Sustainability Leaders. As a founder and CEO of BiomassTrust LLC (Venture incubated at Harvard Innovation Labs), Javier developed a disruptive intellectual property recognized in 198 countries (WO2018068111A1) to unlock the largest forest biomass production in the world, stocking carbon at least 6 to 10 times faster than the current wood pellet fuel. BiomassTrust's technology was presented at "TEDx Talks" due to their breakthrough solution opens the global market of "sustainable eucalyptus wood pellets biofuel" - without chlorine, enabling them to be used for fuel in hundreds of nations where they were previously barred. Prior to Harvard, he was a Senior Specialist at Brazilian Reference Center on Biomass (CENBIO); Shell Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation; and Australian Biomass for Bioenergy Assessesment at New South Wales Government in Australia. In the last 11 years, he has led and co-led several projects and technical reports, together with government officials, scholars, corporate leaders, and NGOs, working in an international context, such as REN21 (UNEP); Global Network of Energy for Sustainable Development (GNESD); International Energy Agency (IEA); Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP); Group of 77 (UN); German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and many othersIn addition, he has written book chapters in the context of Latin American Governance and Natural Resources along with former Chilean President, also with ex. President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). BA in Forest Engineering and MSc. in Forest Products TechnologyJavier was a Visiting PhD in Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University (Netherlands), and he holds his PhD degree in Energy with the highest honors from University of São Paulo (Brazil) obtaining the “USP Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award 2017". In recognition of his work received other honors, including “Young Researcher” on World Sustainable Energy Days; “Brazilian Prize of Innovation & Technology in Biomass”; “First place - 2021 Pitch Deck Competition at Harvard GSAS Business Club”; and “Spark Grants” by Harvard Innovation Labs.
