The Kissler laboratory studies autoimmunity. Our focus is on the immune defects that underlie type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which immune cells cause the destruction of insulin producing beta cells.

 

Our goal is to devise new strategies for the prevention or treatment of autoimmunity.

 

To achieve this goal, we are investigating mechanisms central to the regulation of immune function. Most recently, we have also embarked on a search for gene modifications that could protect beta cells against immune-mediated killing. This is an exciting new area of research that could enable beta cell replacement therapy as a cure for type 1 diabetes.
