  • working title: Действие происходит в полусказочное-полуисторическое время:
Medieval Russia on Stage and in Society, 19th century to today

Katie's dissertation project takes on the the Russian medieval revival of the 19th century, and the fascination with Old Russia stretching into the early modernist period and beyond. Her project explores the relationship between fantasy and history, legend and chronicle, and is most interested in the role of imagination, fairy-tales and myth-making in the modern recastings of a native Russian past. Her work looks at opera, design, fine arts, literature, architecture, and material culture produced in the 19th and 20th centuries. The project explores issues of multimodal art and representations of the medieval period in cultural memory, and looks at Russia's complicated relationship with Western Europe and its own native past.
