Creative Appropriations: Russian 19th Century Literature

As part of their coursework for "Russian Literature in Translation: The 19th Century Tradition," taught by Dr. Kotsyuba in the fall of 2016-17, students were asked to engage creatively with the overarching themes and questions of the readings and discussions. Their resulting artworks – texts, poems, video and audio clips – were meant to be a creative reaction to an aspect of the readings that particularly fascinated them. Submissions included a short video, a poem, a "diplomacy play," a podcast, a GIS map, and an installation – they can be experienced by clicking on the photograph with the name of the student below.

The photographs above are self-portraits ("selfies") that seek to embody the outcomes of the students' creative projects, the creative ideas themselves, involvement and connection with them that students experienced during their creative process.
