I investigate the cognitive and social processes by which young children explore and develop conceptions about how the world around them works. I am particularly interested in the role of sociocultural and pedagogical factors in supporting young children’s learning in both formal and informal settings. I ask: What are the behaviors, spaces, and opportunities that support children as they learn and develop their understandings of the world? and What are the roles of adults, culture, and pedagogy in shaping children's learning experiences? My research focuses on play, making, and science learning in early childhood as contexts to explore these questions across cultures.
