I am a PhD student in the Bioinformatics and Integrative Genomics program. I am interested in biomedical research at the intersection of genomics, immunology, epidemiology and public health. I study tuberculosis (TB), a disease that is prevalent in my home country, South Africa. My current research in the Farhat Lab investigates evidence of mixed genetic variants (e.g. heteroresistance) in Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterial isolates in order to (1) differentiate real genetic variants at intermediate/mixed allele frequencies from sequencing error, and (2) determine how antibiotic resistance phenotypes are explained by resistance-conferring variants at mixed allele frequencies.
