Today the United States celebrates the 155th anniversary of the emancipation of African American slaves and this year Harvard University has closed to commemorate the event. It is an uncomfortable and painfully obvious fact that the effects of anti-Black racism permeates academic science. It is also evident that this will not change without active efforts from the scientific community. As a member of the scientific community that includes myself.
