Our genetic material (DNA) is packaged into physical objects known as chromosomes. We possess two sets of chromosomes; one inherited from each of our biological parents. The chromosomes that we inherit from our parents are a mosaic of the chromosome sets that they inherited from their parents. As a result, our chromosomes are a complex patchwork or the chromosomes of our ancestors. Interestingly, this chromosomal shuffling is necessary for fertility. I am investigating the mechanism by which cells regulate this genetic phenomenon.
