  • Matthew Sussman is a Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Sydney and a former Lecturer on History and Literature at Harvard University. His current departmental staff page can be found here: http://sydney.edu.au/arts/english/staff/profiles/matthew.sussman.php.

    A scholar of Victorian literature and culture, Matthew has published and delivered papers on a wide range of topics relating to style and ethics in fiction, including Anthony Trollope and Henry James, moralism and aestheticism, bureaucratic writing and genre theory. Born in Toronto, Canada, he graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College and received an M.Phil in Contemporary European Studies from Trinity College, University of Cambridge, before completing his doctoral studies at Harvard. His graduate work there was supported by an SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship from Canada, a Dexter Term-Time Fellowship, and an Interdisciplinary Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the Mahindra Humanities Center and Mellon Foundation.

    Before and during his PhD, Matthew was a cabinet officer and policy analyst for the Department of Canadian Heritage, in Ottawa, where he provided the Minister and Minister of State with strategic advice and policy analysis on initiatives related to the arts, multiculturalism, and human rights. He has also spent time as a travel writer and book editor.
