This course explores the intersection of race, law, and educational access in the United States. We will begin with an overview of the U.S. legal system and the basics of reading and understanding legal cases in order to develop the tools to analyze the relevant case law. We will then cover major U.S. Supreme Court and other cases that deal with race and educational access. Our topics include segregation, desegregation, and resegregation in American schools, race-conscious admissions in higher education, and the future of race-conscious policies.
