Impact

WLR has:

  • Trained more than 7500 RAs.
  • Created more than 4400 neighborhood libraries worldwide.
  • Reached more than 448,900 children in 54 countries.

WLR has forged cross-sector relationships to deepen our impact and involve the government and private sector in expanding investment in and ownership over literacy development in local communities.

We have published 32 children’s books in Arabic incorporating themes designed to educate children about particular issues such as energy, water conservation, and littering; social inclusion; refugees; non-violence; gender equality; and disabilities.

e observe and measure a range of positive results. Men encourage their wives to become RAs. Mosque clerics open their doors to women to hold reading sessions and donate funds to buy books, a willingness typically reserved for men. Children have developed a culture of literacy, recommending books to their friends. They are better able to feel empathy, respond to challenges, and recover from trauma. Parents inform us that their children also enjoy greater self-confidence and academic success.
