About me

I have a PhD in Epidemiology from McGill University (Canada), where my thesis work focused on the genomic epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the Canadian Arctic and the application of next-generation sequencing to tuberculosis. I subsequently completed a Postdoc in Bioinformatics at the Microbiological Diagnostic Public Health Laboratory at The University of Melbourne, in the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Australia). I joined Dr. Bill Hanage's lab in the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics in December 2017. I started as an Assistant Professor in the Epidemiology Division at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) at the University of Toronto in 2019, but have since assumed a primary appointment in public health at the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services in Québec, Canada. I continue to hold an Adjunct appointment in Epidemiology at DLSPH.

While I work on multiple infectious diseases, my foci at present are tuberculosis and COVID-19. I employ diverse methods in both my public health practice and my research, integrating classical epidemiology, genomics and bioinformatics to understand transmission dynamics and identify risk factors for disease. I have experience working on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Neisseria gonorrhoeae, as well as other clinically-important pathogens.

I have held a Fellowship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for my Postdoctoral work, and am an investigator on collaborative grants from the Réseau en Santé Respiratoire du Fonds de Recherche Santé Québec (2018-2019) and CIHR (2018-2020) focusing on Mycobacterium abscessus and Clostridium (Clostridiodes) difficile, respectively.

In addition to my PhD, I have a BScN (and Honours BSc in Immunology) and have practiced as a nurse in Intensive Care in a hospital in Toronto, Ontario. I have also been involved clinically in the public health response to a major TB outbreak in Nunavik, Québec (Canada).
