ASEEES 2016 Roundtable "New Thoughts on the Bloc: The Transnational Turn in Cold War History"
This roundtable invites young scholars to debate the challenges and opportunities of the transnational turn in Cold War History. How does doing transnational history change the way we approach archives and sources, periodization and units of analysis? How do we bring the emerging body of global history and international history in conversation with "our" Soviet and East European literature? Furthermore, which historiographical stakes are involved? Can a transnational and global approach to Cold War Eastern Europe help us to rethink the standard narratives of Cold War History? What are the potentials to normalize East European and Balkan history and make the field more attractive?
Roundtable Members: Rachel Applebaum (Tufts U), Betty Banks (NYU), Timothy Nunan (Harvard U), Elidor Mëhilli (Hunter College, CUNY), Carolin Roeder (Harvard U, organizer), Terry Martin (Harvard U, chair).
