I'm pleased to give this year's Sajkovic Lecture at Mount Holyoke College. Bigfoot, Yeti, Sasquatch—the legendary Abominable Snowman has many names. Popularized in the 1950s, the creature wanders freely between the realms of folklore, popular culture, and pseudo-science. Yet, who would have thought that it was in the Soviet Union where tales of a snezhnyi chelovek created not only a community of lay enthusiasts but also received serious attention from established scholars of the Academy of Science? Tracing the career of the Soviet Snowman, I will show that “yetis are good to think with” and explore what the creature can reveal about the relationship between Soviet science, ideology, and transnational popular culture in the Cold War.
