Symposium on Contemporary Translation in Transition: English, German, and Russian Poetry

March 6, 2020
Sponsored by the DFG, University of Trier, and multiple Harvard supporters, I joined with Henrieke Stahl, Maria Khotimsky, Will Waters, and Friederike Reents to organize this symposium on what turned out to be the eve of the pandemic lockdown. We were able to bring guests from Germany, Latvia, the UK, and several other US universities together for what now feels like an impossible crossing of borders. The conversation with poets, translators, and scholars was very lively; Maria and Friederike are editing a volume based on the symposium, which should appear in 2022.
History of Russian Literature

History of Russian Literature

April 16, 2018

The History of Russian Literature on which I've been working with Andrew Kahn, Mark Lipovetsky, and Irina Reyfman for quite a while has just been published, to our near disbelief. It's been a great pleasure to work with such splendid co-authors and colleagues, and we're extremely happy to see our (huge) book out there in the world.

I'll speak about the poetry of Lida Yusupova at the Yale workshop (March 4-5, 2016) organized by Marijeta Bozovic and Marta Figlierowicz. Their larger project is situated here: http://utopiaafterutopia.com, where likely a full program will soon appear.

I am pleased to join in the work of bringing a huge new Russian Library of literary classics and new work into English translation, to be published by Columbia University Press. Here's the New York Times report on our meeting in Moscow on June 27, 2015.

Olga Sedakova, In Praise of Poetry

August 13, 2014

Open Letter Press has just released the advance copies of our translation of Olga Sedakova, In Praise of Poetry. Together with Caroline Clark and Ksenia Golubovich, I worked for several years on the large, challenging texts in this book: the prose memoir "In Praise of Poetry," which Caroline translated; the poetry cycle "Tristan and Isolde," which Caroline and Ksenia translated, and the long cycle "Old Songs," which I translated. We also include an interview with Olga done for the occasion of our book, as well as her acceptance speech on receiving the Master's Prize in...
