In this talk, Ruth Rogaski will be speaking about her new book, Knowing Manchuria: Environments, the Senses, and Natural Knowledge on an Asian Borderland (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2022), an important study that "places the creation of knowledge about nature at the center of our understanding of a little-known but historically important Asian landscape."

How might the history of Manchuria help us think about the nature of knowledge and technologies of extraction in the modern age? In this discussion, Ruth Rogaski and yours truly will draw on our recent books to reflect on the intersections of science, technology, and the environment in the making and unmaking of this remarkable region. We will be joined in conversation by David L. Howell, the Robert K. and Dale J. Weary Professor of Japanese History at Harvard University.
