I am a PhD candidate (ABD) in Religion, Gender, and Culture with a secondary field in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University. My work, published in Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion and Theology & Sexuality and forthcoming in Journal of the American Academy of Religion, examines the development of contemporary understandings of gender, sex, and sexuality, specifically attending to the historical development of the field we now call transgender studies and its relation to religious rhetoric and theories of subjectivity and fetishism. Invested in the discourses of psychoanalysis, deconstruction, and feminist, queer, and gender theory, my dissertation "Public Parts: Psychoanalysis, the Study of Religion, and Transgender Subjectivity" charts the theoretical paradigms and phobias that appear in feminist scholarship from 1980-2000 when transness enters the frame.
