Sonia Alves is a doctoral candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). Her work focuses on understanding the impacts of neighborhood experiences on academic outcomes in children and youth. Specifically, she is interested in identifying the underlying mechanisms that link community violence exposure to academic functioning. She is also interested in identifying protective factors that can be used to mitigate the negative consequences of community violence exposure, as well as targeted school and community-based prevention and intervention approaches that aim to promote positive development and academic success in children and youth.
