A native speaker of Russian Ghilyana Dordzhieva received her Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. In 2000 – 2006 she worked as an associate professor at the Saint Petersburg State University for the Art and Culture, and at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. She taught courses on musical folklore of Russian regions, ethnomusicological methods and analyses, fieldwork, musical transcription, as well as supervised individual research of graduate students. She had many years of fieldwork in provinces of Russia, recording instrumental music, songs, and documenting older forms of rural culture. Her field recordings collections are deposited in the World Music Archive at Harvard University, and in the Traditional Music Archive at Indiana University (Bloomington). In recent years she focused on educational programs promoting traditional music. She is the originator of the Zhavoronushki Folklore Family Club.  For over ten years Russian speaking families of this Boston club have gathered to celebrate their authentic culture with the Russian language, dress, folk art and traditional music tied to rural rituals. In 2017-2019 she has been curator and teacher for The Traditional Song Project' summer camps, workshops and master-classes.
