A native speaker of Russian, Dr. Burvikova received her Ph.D. in Russian as a foreign language at the Pushkin State Institute of Russian Language in Moscow, Russia, where during her study and after her graduation, she taught Russian to the foreign students and worked as curriculum and test developer.
Dr. Burvikova holds the position of Russian language instructor at the University of Southern Maine and Northeastern University. She teaches Russian language courses at different levels of proficiency, as well as the courses for heritage speakers. At the University of New Hampshire, Dr. Burvikova leads multiple student summer programs in Russia. Dr. Burvikova is an author of many articles on education and Russian language teaching to foreign students. She regularly presents at different academic conferences in the US and in Russia.
