On April 5th, 2017 I received the first of several messages that Liberty Mutual had given the whole staff at the Research Institute 60 days’ notice and that the Institute would be closed following that (statutory) notice. The press response, unlike that of the global research community, was muted.
My personal position
Clearly, my own position offers an inside-out view of the value proposition which it appears was no longer shared by the LM executive in 2017. I am not happy with the destruction of a project which many others, from CEOs to researchers to site personnel believed in and worked to develop day by day, which in my opinion is a result of shortsighted management in both by the Company and the Institute.
We, and I believe I speak for all around the world who worked in or with the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety, continue to be proud of our goal of helping people lead safer more secure lives and appreciate the words Ted Kelly chose in 2004 to describe our efforts,
“…within these walls, we changed lives. We kept our promise and we honored our pledge to help people lead safer, more secure lives
