Matthew W. Wilson, PhD, is Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Kentucky and Visiting Scholar at the Center for Geographic Analysis at Harvard University. He co-founded and co-directs the New Mappings Collaboratory which studies and facilitates new engagements with geographic representation.

Matt’s scholarly activities are at the intersection of critical human geography and geographic information science, as part of an evolving research agenda in ‘critical GIS’. His research draws upon STS and urban political geography to understand the development and proliferation of location-based technologies, with particular attention to the consumer electronic sector. As part of a growing group of geographers interested in critical technology studies, Matt has organized a number of symposia and workshops at international venues to both situate and study the application of a critical GIScience.

He is co-editor of Understanding Spatial Media (SAGE) and his most recent book is New Lines: Critical GIS and the Trouble of the Map (University of Minnesota Press). He has previously taught at Ball State University and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Matt holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Washington, where he also earned a Masters degree. He completed his undergraduate studies in geography and computer science at Northwest Missouri State University.
