This international conference was co-organized by William Julius Wilson and 
Marta Tienda (Princeton University), in cooperation with the Johann Jacobs Foundation on October 22-25, 1998 in Marbach, Germany.
The goals of the conference were (1) to assess the current knowledge about ways to enhance the life chances of youth, particularly those reared in economic disadvantage; (2) to determine the kinds of interventions that are most successful in ameliorating the pernicious effects of poverty and under what conditions.
