This course focuses on the Buddhist spiritual Path or ‘marga’ through the lens of spiritual formation theories. Students will be introduced to religious and secular theories of spiritual formation, human development, and moral growth. They will then examine Buddhist literature on the Path from Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana sources for their applicability to contemporary human spiritual development. This course explores the rise and role of “unconventional” orientations towards institutionalized religion in the United States, starting with Deism, Freethinkers, Transcendentalism, and Spiritualism and extending forward into the present day to include the New Atheists, Secular Humanists, Spiritual-But-Not-Religious, Spiritually Fluid, “Nones,” and others who do not identify with traditional religious institutions. Meaning Making - Thinking Theologically about Ministry Experience

This course is designed for students in their first field education placement concurrent with the academic year. It focuses on exploring the theological dimensions of students' field education experience.
